Deconstruction of The Card Players

When structure attempts to regulate freedom, freedom simultaneously challenges back.

In The Card Players (1890), Paul Cézanne encapsulates the power dynamics between two men within an almost perfect geometric composition and firm brushwork, hinting at a timeless fascination with the game of power.

My deconstruction of this painting distils its elements into exaggerated hats, moustache, pipe, and scattered fragments of playing cards crafted in ceramics. Using engobe, I sought to evoke the original palette, yet my brushwork embraces a more casual and liberated quality, reflecting a contemporary reinterpretation of Cézanne’s exploration of authority and leisure.
